A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from Chris over at Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz , speaking of his needs for the 1977 Topps set he was working on. Having broken up a set, I replied to his plea by letting him know I had ten of the twelve (I think those were the numbers!) and that I’d send them his way. Chris responded by asking what cards I’m looking for. Looking to build up my PCs of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, I mentioned his blog’s namesakes. It just so happened that he had a nice cache of the Big Three- and sent a ton my way.
Chris, in his generosity, sent way too many cards to post here (with Word Press’ limited storage, it would probably wipe out what space I have available)- so I’m going to put some of the highlights. I will say this: a good chuck of the cards were needed for my collections, so it was much appreciated!
Yes, there is often a need for those junk-wax era cards. I had most of the 1992 cards in a different collector’s life, before I completely purged my collection of everything, save a few Topps team sets, so the Fleer and Score cards were a nice addition.
Many of the cards Chris sent were from a different time period when I was no longer collecting: the early 2000’s. After my daughter was born and my best friend (and collecting buddy) died, I was out of the hobby for a number of years. I’ve shown a few on these three scans.
So remember, folks, just because you might think that everyone already has that junk wax product doesn’t mean they do. And yes, there’s always someone who will gladly take it off your hands.
Thanks again, Chris, for the trade. I hope you enjoy the 77’s as much as I’m enjoying the cards of the Big Three!
